Birth of the One Dojo

One-Dojo-Exterior-signageThis year marks the 20th year of the rebirth of the Boulder dojo of Rocky Mountain Ki Society. Since those early days in 1999, we have been visualizing a multi-disciplinary space where people practice a variety of arts centered around oneness, connection, and community—a much needed respite from our fast-paced, busy world.

Today, our new home at the One Dojo on 3005 Sterling Circle is the new beginning of that mindful community. Our intention is for the benefits of the meditative, interpersonal relationship practice, and graceful movements we are experiencing at Boulder Ki Aikido to resonate and attract a larger group of people—people who are seeing the separation and selfishness in the world, who want a new light, a new direction. Read more…

BKA Community Comes Together with Google Groups

In an effort to keep our BKA community together and for members to communicate with the whole group, to share ideas/insights, post questions/comments, seek assistance, and stay connected, we have set up a Boulder Ki Aikido Community in Google Groups.

BKA Rates Increase, Beginning March 15, 2019

To ensure we have a successful new beginning at the One Dojo, we will be raising our rates starting March 15, 2019. We have not increased rates in more than 15 years and now need to meet the rising real estate costs in Boulder!

See the new rates here
You may sign up for existing long-term plans now, to save in the coming months.

This rate increase is necessary for us to maintain a healthy, sustainable space in which the One Dojo community can flourish. Prices are competitive with the Boulder market and are scaled to encourage larger families to bring multiple members to practice in our dojo community.

Some of the major highlights are as follows:
  1. The average rate increase is ~ 20%:
    • from $75 to $90 for 1X per week
    • from $125 to $145 for 2X per week for Children’s classes
    • from $100 to $120 for up to 5 hours of adults classes (which includes any combination of four M & W teens, all-levels, or advanced classes; and one all-levels Saturday class).
    • Any adult participating in all 7 adult classes will need to move up to the new $150 per month unlimited class rate.
  2. Parents are encouraged to participate in their children’s classes. The price for parents will be at a savings of 50% of the full children’s class rates.
  3. Rates are scaled to provide savings for multiple children in one family and encourage total family participation.
  4. Long-Term PRE-PAID discounts will be available to everyone, as follows:
    • 3-Month Pre-Paid DISCOUNT | Save 10% Discounts
    • 6-Month Pre-Paid DISCOUNT | Save 12% Discounts
    • 12-Month Pre-Paid DISCOUNT | Save 15%
  5. Additional members of the same household can save 40%. This savings will also apply to parents who want to start training in adults classes.
  6. The total family maximum will go up from $200 to $250.

If the rate increase is cost-prohibitive for you and need to apply for financial hardship, please let us know by replying to this email. Financial hardship applications will need to be processed annually.

Mindfulness Training Center | The Birth of the One Dojo

A New Center for Mindfulness Training is Rising!

Happy Beginnings on the Lunar Year of the Pig!

This year marks the 20th year of the rebirth of the Boulder dojo of Rocky Mountain Ki Society. Less than a handful of faces remain of the original crew, but the spirit and teachings of Mind Body Aikido are still as relevant today (if not more) as they were in 1999.

Koichi Kashiwaya Sensei originally founded our parent martial arts organization, Rocky Mountain Ki Society (RMKS) in 1977, in Boulder, Colorado. The Denver and Boulder dojos merged into one new dojo in 1997, in Westminster, Colorado (which now serves as the official Headquarters of RMKS). With the encouragement and approval of both his teachers—Kashiwaya- and Russell Smith-Sensei—in 1999, Abel Villacorta Sensei formed Boulder Ki Aikido.

Over the last two decades, instructors at Boulder Ki Aikido have touched the lives of more than a thousand students, inculcating them with the teachings of Mind Body Unified Aikido, as expressed by Soshu Koichi Tohei Sensei.

Today, the tradition of disseminating the principles, interpersonal relationship practice, and graceful movements of Shin Shin Toitsu Aikido continues and is growing steadily in Boulder.

Birth of the One Dojo: A Center for Mindfulness Training

mindfulness training center at one dojo in boulder coloradoSince those early days in 1999, when the Boulder dojo was given new life by subleasing from Karate America, we have been visualizing a multi-disciplinary, mindfulness training space where people practice a variety of arts centered around oneness, connection, and community—a much needed respite from our fast-paced, busy world.

The One Dojo space at 3005 Sterling Circle is the start of that mindful, multi-disciplinary community center.

The One Dojo is intended for people who share the vision of practicing oneness, interpersonal connection, healing, and mindfulness. The relational, conflict resolution-based art of Mind-Body-Unified Aikido is at the heart of this offering, with its Self-defense techniques, ki breathing, ki meditation, ki testing, as well as taigi and weapons practice.

Our new home will allow the benefits of the meditative, interpersonal relationship practice we are leading at Boulder Ki Aikido to potentially resonate and attract a larger group of people—people who are seeing the separation and selfishness in the world, who want a new light, a new direction.

Mindfulness Training Encapsulated in the One Dojo Logo

The name One Dojo bears a deep meaning. It centers on the concept that everything we offer will seek to create onenessto realize we are all one. It also aims to be one home where many modalities can gather around one concept, rather than having separate places to practice meditation, mindfulness training, movement arts, and martial arts of self defense.

image of one dojo logo | mindfulness training center logoThe One Dojo logo is comprised of an enso circle and a single vertical stroke. Adapted from Zen Buddhism, a philosophy which imbues Mind Body Aikido with its core principles, the enso expresses a moment when mind and body are one and free to create. It serves to represent “the circle of life and the connectedness of existence” and holds the space for Self-expression—the single vertical stroke. Additionally, the O also has a western meaning—it is the first letter of the word ONE. The celestial blue color was chosen for its relation to spiritual aspirations and the pursuit of inner peace. Thus, the totality of the logo represents a community space where practitioners can feel safe to nurture their spirit.

The One Dojo is Seeking to Expand

The recently expanded One Dojo community is seeking great teachers and responsible subtenants to share our space, leading classes, workshops, events, seminars, photoshoots and other opportunities.

We envision modalities such as:

  • Iaido, Japanese Jujutsu, Judo, Daitō-ryū Aiki-jūjutsu,
  • Yoga, Partner, Acro-yoga
  • Meditation, or Mindful Movement
  • Sistema, Capoeira, Wing Chung, Kung Fu, Tai Chi, Chin Na, Qi Gong
  • Contact Improv, Performance Art
  • Circling, Psoas Embodiment, Bioenergetics, Spine Spiraling, and Body Ball Massage or similar;
  • PiYo, Tabata, Mat Pilates, Barre or similar, high intensity interval training
  • Kirtans

The One Dojo is currently available for all types of classes, workshops, events, seminars, parties, rehearsals, and performances. For more information, please see our Boulder Studio Rental page.

Sunday, January 13th, 2019
7:00 a.m. arrival

@BKA dojo
Prompt start thereafter, until finished,

Senshin no Gyo is a ceremony that serves as a cleansing of the mind and body at the beginning of the new year. As Shinichi Tohei Sensei explains here, there are 2 primary points to the training:
  1. “If we are able to maintain calmness at our one point, no matter how challenging our situation may be, with training and experience we are able to go through it effortlessly;”  and
  2. “In welcoming a New Year, the icy water helps wash away all the events that have happened in the past year, whether they may have been good or bad.”

Lael Keen Sensei began her study of Shin Shin Toitsu Aikido (Aikido with Mind and Body Unified), in 1976, at the ripe age of 17. She was immediately attracted by the beauty of the movement and its non-violent philosophy.

She currently holds a 5th degree black belt and is also certified teacher of Shin Shin Toitsu Do (The Art of Mind Body Union) by the International organization of Shin Shin Toitsu Aikido Kai in Tokyo.

In 1984, she graduated and started her career in Rolfing, a technique aimed at realigning the human body around the central axis and the integration of this alignment in daily activities. She became a certified Rolfing Instructor in 1995.

She is one of the founding members of the Association of Rolfers and teaches Rolfing worldwide.

In 1993, she began the practice of Somatic Experiencing, an approach for the treatment of post-traumatic stress, founded by Dr. Peter Levine, and was studying with him in the United States. (aka River Misogi and Bell Misogi, respectively)

Sunday, January 14th, 2018
7:00 a.m. arrival

@BKA dojo

ABOUT LAEL KEEN SENSEI

5th degree black belt in Shin Shin Toitsu Aikido (Ki Aikido)
Chuden in Shin Shin Toitsu Do (Ki Development)
Former Uchideshi to Kashiwaya Sensei

She is a pioneer of this work in Brazil. With her husband, Russell Jones, and 3 other Somatic Experiencing practitioners, she founded the Somatic Experiencing Association of Brazil. She is currently on the faculty of the advanced level of education of the Human Enrichment Foundation and Somatic Experiencing Association of Brazil.

Lael became interested in group dynamics as a way to facilitate not only the learning process, but also human relationships. In 2006, she and her husband invited Mukara Meredith, MSW, founder of the CHT Matrixworks™ Group Dynamics system, Brazil. Since then, both are students of Mukara and Matrixworks™.

A lifelong student, she presently studies Anthroposophical Art Therapy.

She now lives in southern Santa Catarina Island where she and her husband Russell Jones Sensei (6th degree black belt in Shin Shin Toitsu Aikido) have a Center of Natural Therapies and Martial Arts offering courses in Ki Aikido, Rolfing, Experience Somática® and Matrixworks® .

ABOUT RUSSELL JONES SENSEI

6th degree black belt in Shin Shin Toitsu Aikido (Ki Aikido)
Joden in Shin Shin Toitsu Do (Ki Development)
Former Head Instructor for Rocky Mountain Ki Society

While studying psychology at the University of Colorado in 1975, Jones Sensei was offered the rare opportunity to do a traditional apprenticeship (Uchi Deshi training) with Kashiwaya Sensei, 8th Dan in Shin Shin Toitsu Aikido.

After 5 years of intensive training, Jones Sensei moved to Japan to study with the premier teacher of mind-body unified Aikido, Soshu Koichi Tohei. Some years later he discovered a powerful and complementary way to work with trauma and became a practitioner of Somatic Experiencing.

Together with his wife, Lael Keen Sensei, world-renowned Rolfing professor and 5th Dan in Shin Shin Toitsu Aikido, they operate a healing and learning center in Florianopolis, on the island of Santa Catarina, off the South Coast of Brasil.
