In this hands-on workshop, Kashiwaya Sensei will introduce you to Kiatsu, the healing modality of Shinshin Toitsu Aikido (Ki Aikido). He’ll guide you through its mind-body principles as you experience first-hand how to deliver and receive Ki pressure to help heal yourself and others. Open to all students currently training at any Ki Aikido dojo.

The Benefits of Kiatsu

Over the course of the last few decades, many students have reported a wide variety of benefits through Kiatsu, affecting both illnesses and injuries. These include decreased bruising, decreased swelling, decreased pain, and more rapid healing. Perhaps the most important benefit is that students are better able to take care of themselves. The improvements in calmness and concentration that result from studying Kiatsu can have huge impacts on the quality of people’s lives.

What is Kiatsu?

Ki is living power. It is the energy of the universe that flows through us strongly when we are relaxed, focused, and unify our mind, body, and spirit.

Kiatsu is the process of channeling Ki to ourselves or another person to help stimulate one’s own natural healing abilities. The Kiatsu practitioner unifies mind, body, and spirit using meditation while practicing good posture. The practitioner then touches the part of the body that is being treated with a mild-to-moderate amount of pressure.

Muscles relax, circulation improves, and swelling is often reduced. Pain usually decreases as a result. Subjects learn to do this for themselves. By practicing deep breathing and improving posture, subjects can reduce stress in their daily lives.

Tohei Sensei developed Kiatsu as a way for us to realize the oneness of mind and body and the healing power that is naturally ours. Rather than focusing on “points,” Kiatsu directs Ki through “lines” or meridians that run throughout the entire body. By connecting with another person through Ki, you fill their mind and body with positive energy, accelerating the healing process made possible by the Ki of the Universe.

Five Principles of Kiatsu

  1. Extend Ki from the One-Point in the lower abdomen
  2. Put no strength and have no tension in your body
  3. Send Ki perpendicularly toward the center without forcing
  4. Ki is connected infinitely at your fingertips
  5. Concentrate on lines, rather than points
